What is To climb?

Climbing is an adventure sport where you challenge yourself both physically and mentally by climbing walls, rocks or cliffs. This is not just about strength, but also about technical insight to determine the right routes up.

Beginners course

The Climbing course is a beginners course where you learn to climb on the climbing wall in the Sports Center. The emphasis is on learning to climb safely, through the correct belay techniques and the use of various climbing materials. At the end of this course you can take an exam for the Indoor Toprope climbing certificate from the Dutch Royal Mountain Sports Association (NKBV). During the tenth lesson you go to Bjoeks (link) (the largest climbing wall in the Netherlands), on Kardinge. You can climb here for €6.

Note: The first two lessons are mandatory! If you are absent from one of these lessons, the course cannot be continued.

Lead climbing course (advanced)

Are you ready for the next step in climbing? Register now for the lead climbing course! In four lessons you will learn: safe lead climbing, neat sets of cliffs, commands in a lead climbing situation, dealing with lead climbing falls, dealing with rope in a lead climbing situation, assessing situations for safety and acting appropriately.

We expect you to be on time for every lesson and to be able to progress to the 5c level.

The lessons take place at the Sports Center and in Bjoeks. Bjoeks' entrance fee is not included in the course.

Open hour

After completing the beginner climbing course or after acquiring sufficient belay skills elsewhere, you can use the climbing wall and the bouldering wall in the Sports Center during open hours under the supervision of a qualified instructor. Always register for the open hour via the app.

Renting climbing shoes costs €1. You can purchase a strip card for this at the Sports Center counter. The strip cards are available in €5 and €10.

Location

GSAC
The GSAC is the student sports association in Groningen for everything that has to do with mountains! This can be climbing or bouldering, but also alpine and skiing! As a member you can take climbing courses at all levels to become increasingly independent in (and up) the mountains. In addition, there are 20 weekends away every year where you can climb outside with other GSAC members, there is a winter sports week and a summer climbing week. You never climb alone, which is why there are plenty of social activities to enjoy with monthly drinks and activities. Members of GSAC can use the climbing wall when it is free. For this you must be in possession of a climbing certificate. Look at the website from GSAC for the availability of the climbing wall.
