Speed Skating
When you think of a typically Dutch sports, speed skating quickly comes to mind. A collective craze hits the Dutch when temperatures outside drop enough for lakes and canals to be covered with a layer of ice thick enough to skate on. All of a sudden the world problems don’t seem so important, more interesting is the chance, however small, that an ‘Elfstedentocht’ (eleven city tour) might take place!
As a student in Groningen you can practice your speedskating skills with the students speedskating club ‘Tjas’. For only €38,- there is a possibility to train twice each week for the whole duration of the speed skating season on the ice rink in Kardinge. The trainings are held on so called ‘Tjas hours’, at which only members of Tjas are allowed on the rink. Groups are formed according to level of skill, and each group has their own trainers. During club matches you can find out how good you have become! More information can be found on www.tjas.nl.
There is a possibility to follow a speed skating course with ACLO as well. These courses are also taught on Tjas hours. There is a possibility to hire skates (6 euro).
Are you not sure you like speedskating? It is possible to try 3 times for free. So you are welcome on Tjas hours.

Did you know:
- Last Winter Olympics the Netherlands had a new medal record, all medals were won on ice (24 medals; 23x speed skating, 1x shorttrack).
- In speed skating technique is immensely important.
- Last Dutch championship speed skating 4 Tjas members participated.
- The first Elfstedentocht was held in 1909, up until now it has been held only 15 times.
